DE Registration 2019 By Steve & Denise Divins
(with some bits borrowed from various other regions)
Welcome to the 2019 Metro NY Driver Educa- tion Season!
The mission and purpose of the Porsche Club of America's Driver's Education Program is to pro- vide a safe, structured and controlled teaching and learning environment. The PCA DE Program is designed so that participants can improve their driving abilities and acquire a better understand- ing of vehicle dynamics and driving safety. Partic- ipants will experience first-hand the capabilities of high performance automobiles in a controlled, closed-course environment and acquire skills that will enhance safer vehicle operation in all driving situations.
One giant word of caution: this can become very addictive. Our instructors will teach you to drive your Porsche the way it was designed to be driv- en. PCA DE Events are run in a safe and con- trolled environment on a closed course. Like any new sport your instructor will guide you into this exciting world of high performance driving. These events are great sources of stories for the Mon- day morning coffee break. You will have dreams about various turns and wake up with memo- ries of your instructor yelling BRAKE or DON'T LIFT. These events are truly the only safe way to learn the engineering dynamics that went into the development of this famous racing marque. However, it is noted that PCA DE Events are not racing, nor preparation for racing. No times or placings are recorded, and no awards or prizes are received by the participants of PCA Driver Education events; just a lot of fun and camarade- rie. Any conduct considered by the Porsche Club of America to be either unsafe or inconsistent with the spirit or purpose of the Driver's Educa- tion Program will not be permitted. This approach keeps the events safe for all participants!
Here is our 2019 Metro NY DE Schedule:
April 5-6 (Fri/Sat) NJMP Thunderbolt/Lightning May 10-11 (Fri/Sat) Palmer Motorsports Park May 29-30 (Wed/Th) Watkins Glen
July 1-2 (Mon/Tues) NJMP Thunderbolt
July 29-30 (Mon/Tues) Lime Rock Park Aug 23-25 (Fri/Sat/Sun) Watkins Glen Oct 4-5 (Fri/Sat) NJMP Lightning
Once again we will be running a full 3 Days of regular DE at our August Watkins Glen Event. All skill levels may attend all 3 days! We will not be offering single day registrations for this event. You will have the option of attending Friday/Sat- urday, Saturday/Sunday, or all 3 days. Not sure why anyone would want to attend less then all 3 days... but the option is there! We will be offer- ing limited garage space rentals for both of our Watkins Glen DE events. See ClubRegistration. net for details.
If you are running a 5 or 6 point harness, you are now REQUIRED to use a head and neck restraint (HANS) device that meets the standards of ei- ther SFI 38.1 or FIA 8858. If you DO NOT have a (HANS) device with your harness, you can either use the factory 3 point belt (if you still have it in your car), or you can choose not to drive on track! This is a rule coming from PCA National that we MUST adhere to. This is for your safety. We want you to be safe – and we want you to come back!
As always, we need to thank all of the great vol- unteers who helped us out last season. Without them, our events could not have run as smoothly as they did. Volunteering a little of your time to help out the DE team is what helps make the DE program as strong as it is. We get so many com- pliments and thanks for running great events... but it is really YOU, the participants and volun- teers, who make the events as great as they are. (Continued on Page 45)
