The end of 2018 membership numbers are in and they are impressive. Metro topped out at 2,181 primary members with 1,053 affiliates at the end of December! These numbers are up by 110 and 30 from the period ending 2017. We thank you for all your referrals - it continues to bring in new members. The winter months are the most challenging for recruiting, as few P-cars dare to be driven on salt covered highways.
National PCA also hit a high mark for member- ship totals. There are 83,482 Primary members with 45,877 co-members, for an impressive total of 129,359; you can say it with pride!
The final event of 2018 was a big event, the holiday party on Dec. 9 with 232 members and their guests attending. Karin Hancock and Peter Koshe were there celebrating their 51st anniver- saries with Metro. Also in the room celebrating their 43rd anniversary was Don and Barbara Co- burn (a.k.a.Santa) who travelled from their home in Delaware to hand out the children’s gifts, ably assisted by Carol Anne Neese, Chief Elf!
While we all wait for the 2019 events to start, one thing you can and should do is drive to Ocean Parkway on the south shore of Long Is- land (if the roads are salt free!). We know there are many beautiful roads in Westchester and if you don’t want to venture too far south, our Trek Chair can give you some winter driving ideas on the northern roads,
Ocean Parkway is relatively traffic free with the scenic bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the south side. There is a group of die hard car enthusiasts of all makes and models that gather on Sunday mornings at Captree Boat Ba- sin, at the eastern most point of Ocean Parkway. There are some great photo opportunities there with the Causeway bridge and Fire Island Light- house a short distance away.
Fire Island Lighthouse, just over the Causeway bridge is worth the trip. The one-half mile trail to the lighthouse from the parking lot will keep you very warm! Another drive that is popular close by is the Tobay Beach parking lot where some of our Autocrosses are held, which is west of Cap- tree on Ocean Parkway and has the best access to the ocean shore line. If the winter sun is shin- ing, it can actually be a nice experience to help cure any cabin fever that may be setting in.
Drive a little further west to the Theodore Bird Sanctuary parking lots at West End 2 and have some fun on the access ramps that lead to now your tires should be somewhat warmed up to do a little bit of imaginary cornering to further exercise that P-car. The view of the ocean is amazing from here. Have a wonderful New Year everyone!
