Rally for Fun by Rich Moores
On April 29th, over 20 Porsches attended the Spring Road Rally “Porsches, Parkways and Poker”. The title conveyed the concept of the Rally. We drove our Porsches on many of the New York State Park- ways and picked up poker cards along the way. Starting in central Nassau County the route went
east on Northern State Parkway to Sunken Meadow Parkway north. We did a U-Turn before entering Sunken Meadow Park (to avoid paying
an admission fee) heading south
to Sagtikos Parkway. After crossing the bridges to Fire Island we turned west onto Ocean Parkway. Ocean Parkway is without a doubt one
of the most scenic roads on Long Island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Great South Bay on the other. It is a GREAT drive any time of the year. As we passed the Tower at Jones Beach we entered Meadow brook Parkway and then joined Southern State Parkway fi- nally exiting and making our way to Plattdeutsche Park for Brunch.
As the cars progressed along the route they were instructed to stop at three checkpoints where they were given a total of seven poker cards. Each team presented their best 5 card Poker hand at the finish for awards (no betting need- ed). Plattdeutsche Park is a large restaurant establishment tracing it’s
beginning to 1883. There is a large catering hall in front, athletic fields in the back and the Beer Garden
in the center. We had Brunch in the beer Garden. A great time was had by all!
event will return to Osprey’s Domin- ion Vineyard. We will have a spe- cial area reserved for us where we will have picnic lunch with our cars parked next to the grape vines.
The Rally will start at the park and ride on the north side of Exit 58 of the LIE. We will follow a course ex- ploring many interesting roads on the North Fork of Long Island. You will be asked to answer questions about things you may, or may not see along the way. When we fin- ish at Osprey’s Dominion each car will receive a bottle of their excel- lent Vintage Red or White wine to enjoy with lunch. Don’t worry about cleaning your car as there will be a “Gimmick” Car Show. Road dust will be to your advantage as a special team of expert judges scrutinize the cars.
There will be opportunities to stop and purchase lunch before finish- ing at the Vineyard. I would sug- gest bringing your own, however, it is your choice. Please bring chairs. Space is limited so register early.
he next Rally will be the Vintage
Rally on July 15th. This annual
